Barzan Towers

Barzan Towers

Barzan Towers, located in Umm Salal Mohammed just north of Doha, are iconic historical structures built in the late 19th to early 20th century. These towers were originally constructed for defensive purposes, particularly to guard water sources and monitor approaching enemies. Their strategic position and height also made them ideal for observing the moon to mark the beginning of Islamic months.

The towers are a fine example of traditional Qatari architecture, built using coral rock, limestone, and mud. They feature thick walls, wooden staircases, and rooftop lookout points designed for surveillance and stargazing. The restoration of the towers has preserved their original charm, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into Qatar’s past.
