Originally opened in 1976, it serves as the home ground for the Qatar national football team and is part of the Aspire Zone sports complex, which includes the Aspire Academy and Aspire Tower.

The stadium underwent major renovations from 2014 to 2017, adding a new canopy that covers all seating areas and installing an advanced cooling system that maintains an optimal temperature on the field while using 40% less energy than traditional systems. It also features LED lighting and has earned a 4-star sustainability rating from FIFA’s Global Sustainability Assessment System.

With a seating capacity of 45,857, Khalifa International Stadium hosted eight matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, including the third-place playoff. The stadium is accessible via the Doha Metro’s Red Line, with the nearest stop at Sports City Station.
